Perfume from Provence by Lady Fortescue

They moved to Provence from England in the 1930’s. They named their house, Domaine. I lived and loved everything about life in Provence with them, especially the warm-hearted people.

A friendly country, this Provence. On certain cottage doors are hung little baskets, or a wooden ‘sabot’(shoe), and into these it is customary sometimes to place a small gift in passing – an egg, a bunch of flowers, an orange, or any little anonymous token of friendship.’ (quoted from page 57)

Reading this, I found a little sachet of lavender in my sabot.
